Skirmish lines in forests and woods

Post by MegaSnegovichok »

Just another question. Can Skirmish units break into skirmish lines and attach to other units deployed in the woods or forests? For instance, Numidian skirmishers in the Roman Labenius flank force in the second Bibracte campaign scenario ("Caesar's Gamble")?

Not during the battle. Only in the deployment stage.

But yes, regardless of terrain they can form skirmish lines and attach to other units.

Given the effect of woods on various unit types strengths, is there any modification for skirmish lines pluses due to terrain. in particular, +2 for an elephant line in forests and wood seems overly effective when normal units have a maximum strength of 2.

Maybe skirmish lines would still get the bonus as I suppose they could arguably be well suited to dodging amongst bushes etc…as for the elephants, well you’ve surely heard of the specially trained units of elephants that hide behind (tree) trunks?! 😄.
Interesting to hear Mark’s take on that query though.

Paint the toenails of your elephants pink, and they can hide up a cherry tree.

I’d just add the skirmish line bonus. Would scare the pants off of me!

Yes, it’s a fairly un-nuanced answer… I can see a fair argument for toning it down for the elephants BUT you’ve got to remember they take a risk roll every time they fight and on a roll of 1-2 they die and the elephant skirmish line is removed so it’s only a temporary advantage. Is it worth risking for a few pesky skirmishers in a wood???
