Steel Lard, 19 November 2022 [updated]

Post by Counterpane »

Steel Lard will take place at Patriot Games in Sheffield on Saturday 19th November 2022. We anticipate hosting about a dozen games from across the Too Fat Lardies catalogue. So far we can tell you that the following are planned:

When the Last Sword is Drawn presented by Sidney Roundwood

Small scale Samurai action from the well-known "Third Lardy". It will doubtless be beautifully presented.

Adapted from the Flashing Blades system by the author.

Rex Britanniarum presented by Jeremy Short

Can the brave and virtuous Sherrif of Lardingham save the royal taxes from the filthy outlaw Robin Hood and his foul band of miscreants? Will good King John be able to use these taxes to ensure the evil doers who would see him overthrown fail miserably?

Some Barons' War action using modified Dux Britanniarum rules

The Sands of Shah Wadi Wadi presented by John Savage

The Sudan 1884. Trouble is brewing in the desert. The Mahdi has risen and is attracting more and more of the desert tribes to his banner. Pasha Hicks leading a mainly Egyptian and Sudanese force against the Mahdi was destroyed last year and now General Gordon is besieged in Khartoum. But it is not just Gordon who is in danger from the Mahdi and his forces. North East of Khartoum lies an isolated settlement containing a small British garrison and a mission headed up by a fire breathing clergyman, the Reverend Obadiah McCready. The press are already calling for resignations and, fearful that the loss of McCready (and more importantly his 3 daughters) to the Mahdi’s forces, Horse Guards have ordered an immediate rescue mission.

A rip roaring adventure for 4 players that pits the darling of Horse Guards, Major Dartington-Cristal against the wily desert fox himself Osram Dinna Muni.

Sharp Practice 2 with the “Go Sharp into the Desert” amendments published in the 2021 Lard Magazine.

A Spy in the Suburbs presented by Richard Crawley and Richard Phillips

Russia, August 1812. As Napoleon’s Grande Armée marches towards Moscow, a separate French corps threatens the key Baltic port of Riga. As the French approach, the city’s Russian governor orders that the suburbs be evacuated and partly demolished to give good fields of fire to the defenders. Unfortunately the resulting fires get out of hand and soon the Moscowa and St Peterburga suburbs are completely destroyed. The French commander, Marshal Etienne Macdonald, has an army of doubtful enthusiasm (it’s mostly made up of reluctant Prussian allies) and no heavy siege guns. Nevertheless he attempts to besiege the port.

If you want mysterious countesses, French Imperial Guard colonels, and wounded spies stalking each other through darkened, ruined streets, this is the game for you.

Sharp Practice 2 rules with some night fighting and hidden movement adaptations, 4 players.

WW1 in Mesopotamia presented by Ken Reilly

Somewhere in Mesopotamia a large action is fought.

If the Lord Spares Us rules.

Up the Arras: Bloody April 1917 presented by Alex Sotheran

Dog-fighting over the Western Front in WW1 using 1/300th scale aircraft models.

Algernon Pulls It Off adaptation of Bag The Hun, 2-6 players.

Havana Take Your Island presented by Tom Davis

An attack on Cuba using the classic map-based Kriegspiel campaign approach. Involves much scribbling of maps and orders. And hats.

Kriegspiel rules.

French and Indian Wars presented by Ken Welsh

If ruthless death and destruction is your thing; if you have the lust to gain back a lost love; if you are a scrapper and like a fight against the odds or have a bit of the sailor in you then this is the game for you.

Captain Stefan Vincent and his mixed force of French and Indians make steady progress upriver towards its intended target - the small hamlet of Croquette. It sleeps peacefully after a heavy night of drinking, mischief and merriment hosted by the Reverend Laurence Holmes for their very special guest. Vincent once again fumbles for his orders direct from Montcalm himself. He pulls the paper out and once again quietly reads the content to himself…

“Mon Cher Stefan,
It clearly appears from the Indians sent out as scouts; from the depositions of several prisoners; from the vast preparations made at Albany and Fort Edward, that the English have offensive intentions in the direction of the upper point of Lake Saint-Sacrement towards Ticonderoga. Upon this intelligence I propose that you lead a diversionary raid upriver towards Lake Ontario for the purpose of attracting a portion of the enemy’s forces there and consequently relieving the pressure on Ticonderoga. You should move discreetly in order not to be detected. When you discover suitable targets of opportunity, you must violently execute your order to raise to the ground any homesteads you fall upon, and put any English homesteaders you find to the sword. The navy will provide you with ample craft and support for your needs in order to complete your mission.
I know I can count on you to do your duty.
God Bless Louis XV
Montcalm”

He put his paper away. Thoughts. Croquette - Simone. The last sighting of his sweetheart Simone was here, captured by the British nearly a year ago. Was she still close by? Could it be possible to rescue her at the same time fulfil his orders?

Meanwhile in Croquette, the early morning mist still hangs over the river. Last night’s guest of honour rises early, as is his custom. He pulls on his boots, slips on his redcoat, and tries to stir old Rufus his dog for his early morning walk. “Bless him” he mutters to himself. “He isn’t getting any younger. It seems a shame to disturb him…”

Sharp Practice 2 rules.

Near Tobruk presented by Graeme Atkinson

A platoon-level action in the Western Desert.

Chain of Command rules.

Red Hot Frigate Action off Le Coup de Cheveux, 1795 presented by Charley Walker

A French Revolutionary War naval encounter.

Kiss Me, Hardy! rules, 2 to 4 players.

With several more to be announced!

Cost for the event is £10 per player - look out for further announcements of additional perks of attendance!

A couple of additional games added.

I'm still waiting to hear from Ade Deacon, Ioan Davies John and Lardy Rich as to what they'll be running.

Just a quick note to say thank you Richard for organising and to all the good chaps who took the time to put on the games with such fantastic tables. Cracking venue and very welcoming.
PS. Richard - well done for putting on the two SP games at the same time, everything worked out in the end with the usual cinematic moments and the French were just French really !

Cheers,
Jason
