Size of units

Hello there
I am new to these rules , and i know they are primarily a skirmish game , but ?, I wondered, Would they work with larger sized units , my own Dark age forces i brought a number of years ago and based them for another rule set , each unit is thirty figures strong , three ranks of ten , to avoid breaking these units up into smaller sized ones , would the rules work , with that size of unit , so in effect a melee would start with twenty dice aside ,
(First two ranks of twenty figures ) plus nobles , plus champion I know it would make the units less susceptible, to shock, with more figures . but ?
Also
On one of my run throughs after combat on page 47 , in the More men killed box it says +3 amongst other things it says the unit is broken and routs , but i cant find anything in the rules , that says how it recovers from rout ? am i missing something ? the unit pursuing rolled a double one in the pursuit distance. so didn't stay in contact
I am always wary of tinkering with rule sets , in case it unbalances them, hence my question I like the rules and the campaign system a lot , and have also brought the raiders supplement
than you mark

Maybe keep the standard unit numbers, but just consider them as unit strength points, and keep track of them with a die? You can remove as many figures as you want per hit taken, but it would mean the shock calculation would remain the same. I have to say, it would look pretty good with that size of unit, and IIRC there aren't that many units in a game.

On the other hand, what size units/armies do most players prefer to play with? What makes a good game? Can more than 2 players participate in a game?

Unless a unit routs off the table, in which case they are gone for the current game, there is no special rule for recovery since 'routed' isn't a state. If they are broken through excess shock, then they are broken, otherwise they are wherever they finished their rout move, any formation broken, with whatever shock they have, facing away from the enemy. The usual rules on rallying shock and movement apply.

As to more than 2 players, that's simple enough, you just need to decide how to handle the cards. We've played with one deck, different cards for every leader, one deck, multiple leaders on one side activating on each card and different decks for each pair of players. All work, just give slightly different games. For the fate cards, every player can have their own cards, all the players on one side can share a deck, or you can have one deck per side with one player (the overall boss) holding the fate cards and allocating them as they see fit.

Hope that helps,

Cheers,
Jim
