Who needs an excuse? Though based on the publicly released information so far, I don't know whether the core mechanisms would be applicable to the period, no pila etc.

In fact, the line was penned by the writing duo of Frank Muir and Denis Norden for an episode of the 1950s radio show Take It From Here (TIFH).
Williams lifted it, and I'm told Muir went to his grave lamenting that he had never been acknowledged as its originator.
