I’m nearing the end of painting up figures for re-fighting the Battle of Bailen. I’m currently working on the Garde Marins and after that I will have one more Spanish line unit to do. The re-fight(s) will not be an exact copy of the actual battle as that would be somewhat pointless. The first will be the French forces under the immediate control of Dupont conducting a concentrated (versus actual piecemeal) attack on the Spanish left wing. However, they will have a limited time to defeat that wing before the right wing can intervene.
Hopefully this link to a Flickr album with my Spanish troops (AB 18mm figures) will work:

I have more Spanish figures but those are from ages ago (mostly minifigs and a few Essex) but I haven’t taken any photos of them yet to complete the album.

Spanish Order of Battle
(Note that there’s no indication of Spanish brigades in available ORBAT)
Division General - Coupigny (campaigner)
1st Brigade
1/Ceuta Line Infantry (standard line)
2/Ceuta Line Infantry (standard line)
2nd Vols de Grenada (small recruit)
Farnesio Cavalry (small reservist campaign)
6lb Foot Battery (standard veteran)
2nd Brigade
Provincial Militia of Trujillo (small reservist)
Provincial Militia of Bujalance (small reservist)
Provincial Militia of Cuenca (standard reservist)
Jaen Line Infantry (large Line)
Walloon Guards (standard veteran)
3rd Brigade
Provincial Militia of Cuidad Real (small reservist)
1/3rd (Reding) Swiss Infantry (standard grenadier)
2/3rd (Reding) Swiss Infantry (standard grenadier)
3/Ordenes Militares Infantry (standard line)
4th Brigade
Borbon Cavalry (standard reservist campaign)
Espana Cavalry (small reservist campaign)
Lancers of Utrera and Jerez (small recruit lancers)
Total Points = 1,850
Note: Spanish troop grades are specific for this battle to reflect (1) probably the best Spanish army of the early war, (2) to provide a differentiation* in troop types and (3) for play balance.
* that is that guards > Swiss > line > Militia > new volunteers.
Otherwise it would probably appropriate to reduce all by one category (i.e., guards = grenadiers, foreign = line, other line = reservist and Militia / volunteers both rated as recruit). The line regiments after being destroyed and then rep,Enid he’d would new recruits would be rated recruit.

SD,
Very nice figures indeed!
Are the Catalan lancers all conversions?

Re: Project Bailen - Spanish
Thanks, DB.
They are converted from AB British light dragoons at rest. They’re a straight forward conversion - remove jacket lace, add lance and add lance loop. If I did this again I would use strands from electrician wire instead of thread for the loops as thread was difficult with which to work. I was worried that the rope would look too thin; instead it could have been thinner.
The figure was taken from the Jose M Bueno plates and is based on a figure in a Denis Deighton painting*. It’s not clear if it’s a lancer or an infantryman with a pike. In my army it’s a lancer.
* I just remembered that the figure is also in the Chartrand Osprey, Vol 3, plate D, figure 3.

If an army can’t be terrific in the battlefield then at least it should be terrific looking. Nothing like running away in style.
