Thanks Peter, Vanth and BVW - from this straw poll so far it does seem that First and Second World Wars and WWI and WWII are the preferences

I believe it’s a British/American English thing.

Second World War has long been the accepted British usage, but World War Two — which was originally American — has made inroads on this side of the Atlantic over the last few decades. In abbreviation it was originally WWII, but with the rise of social media since 2005, WW2 is becoming more common because it’s shorter and less confusing to a non-specialist/foreign readership, though I’m not sure it would be considered acceptable by a mainstream publisher, yet. Many British historians still insist on using ‘Second World War’ and consider ‘World War Two’ as an Americanism.

This is the sort of question that historians James Holland and Al Murray like to discuss on their podcast “We have ways of making you talk”, and indeed have (I vaguely recall) mentioned a couple of times. Might be worth contacting them.

An excellent suggestion - thanks

In short form, I use "WWI/II", while in long form I use "First/Second World War". I will use "Great War" if the context of the discussion is already firmly established as the early 20th Century, especially if we're talking about the socio-cultural effects of it.

I wonder whether we're witnessing infinitesimal pedantry.
Or are we a flank on the culture war against Arabic numerals (Coming over here, enabling long division, zero and fractions).

There may be a generational aspect involved.
WWII looks very much like a branded game console, or a lengthy acronym.
With WW2 you know you're dealing with a number.

There is something in this which certainly appeals to the spelling reformists

Baron
Sorry I am late to this one, but does the medium you are using not affect the response. key stroke is shorter with 2 than with II, as opposed to 1 or I. Little difference to those of us from older school systems, but 'the youth of today' are influenced by such things.

I'm happy to take the honourary title!

The medium definitely does impact - esp. as we see increased online engagement using hand-held devices, and capitalisation and punctuation going the way of the dodo - so ww2 or wwii not unheard of...

And never too late to this party!
