Support from the Side

Post by LancasterMatt »

Got a question about support from the side.

Does the supporting unit need to be in front corner to corner contact with the fighting unit? or

1. Can it be a bit back? (perhaps because it did not have the movement to reach the front).

2. Can it be forward so that the flank of the supporting unit contacts the flank of the enemy unit?

Effectively to provide support, a group must be either in corner to corner contact or to the rear of the group fighting as highlighted in 7.1 (p53).

As shown in 7.2.6 on page 56, Group V, even though in edge to edge contact with Group W, doesn’t provide support as it is too far forward.

So the answer to both situations you have highlighted is “no - they do not provide support”.

Hope this helps.
