HELP RECEIVED - A Big thank you to John Savage
Today my son and I tried our first game of "Infamy Infamy!" Setting up was a lengthy process as we flicked back and forwards through the rules to find definitions and actions. Then we had difficulty deploying troops for a straight fight in Britannia we were unable to find the method for adding supports from the "lists". Being unfamiliar with the rules we definitely got combat wrong - we ended up with lots ad lots of "Shock" markers piled up behind units. In the end the Romans won - mainly as a result of killing the Briton leader and reducing force morale to zero. We certainly think the game has promise but as complete beginners to this we found it difficult but will give it a few more attempts. There is an awful lot to master to get a game going.
So - is there a set of introductory sequenced/structured scenarios that we can work through to learn the rules? Or an "idiot's guide" to the rules? If they had been written for Late Imperial period I would say that the layout is quite Byzantine. We spent more time with our noses in rule books that playing.
I don't use Facebook and have not used other TFL rules before. I have been wargaming since the 1960s and my son since 1990s.
Please help.

Re: HELP PLEASE - Just tried a game and need help
It helps - to an extent - to be familiar with other Lardy rules like CoC or SP2, although there are substantial and significant differences in how each game works.
Many people find the best way to learn Lardy rules is by playing a game against or run by someone already familiar with the rules rather than by just reading the rules, which - I think especially in the case of Infamy - have various caveats, and sometimes these are not always where one might expect in the rules.
I'd suggest watching these videos (I'm limited to two per post for some silly reason, so see further replies below):

I'd also suggest a look at the videos on Youtube as a good start.

Thanks. We will try the videos. The option of playing another person who is familiar is just not possible due to not knowing anyone who plays "Ancients" never mind Infamy, Infamy! locally and being in Level 4 lockdown precludes anyone outside our bubble.Captain Reid wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 4:37 pm Many people find the best way to learn Lardy rules is by playing a game against or run by someone already familiar with the rules rather than by just reading the rules, which - I think especially in the case of Infamy - have various caveats, and sometimes these are not always where one might expect in the rules.

It is a pity that the rule book is so difficult to follow.

If you have Zoom, you could potentially attend one of the Virtual Lardy Days (the next of which is advertised in a post in the general area of these forums).

Even if you can't get a game at Virtual Lard, I'm sure John Savage or Charlie would run a Zoom game for you, and I'm pretty sure they'd both be attending the 'virtual pub' on the Discord server afterwards, so you could ask them then.
