Hougomont

Post by Petracelli » Tue Feb 11, 2020 10:33 pm

Evening

Am in the throws of planning a Waterloo game and am in a quandary as to how to represent Hougomont? Should it be two BUA one for each gate, and another one for the walled gardens? Be interested in your views.

Cheers

Actually tells you in the rules about this one. Hougomont is classed as a strong point.

Not quite, it’s La Haye Sainte which is classified as a strongpoint in the rules. Hougomont isn’t mentioned as far as I can see.

Not sure what the best answer is. I think that at least part of the Chateaux should be a strongpoint, perhaps both halves, leaving the walled garden as a BUA. That would limit the French ability to overwhelm the main garrison with coordinated attacks since they are limited to single battalion attacks on strongpoints. They would need to wear the garrison down.

Hi John.

Just seen your answer to this and Chateau d'Hougoumont is a strongpoint as covered in the rules and more so in the history of the battle where Wellington turned these areas into strong fortified positions and as hougoument is a Chateau then page 62 does cover the famous building without actually naming the building.

Hi Ricky,
I agree that Hougomont is a strongpoint under the rules. The question is whether it should be treated as a single strongpoint or two adjacent ones. Given its size I’m inclined to go with 2.
