Skirmisher basing

Post by alcal » Mon Sep 09, 2019 8:56 am

Hi
I`m just painting and basing my 28mm Napoleonic French army , my line infantry are 36 figs, 6figs to a base two ranks deep 45mm width , so for my skirmish bases (if i have this right) from one and a half up to two times the width of one close order base 67mm to 90mm with as many figs as looks right.?

Cheers AL

I doubled the base width for my skirmishers for my 18mm army going from 25mm squares with 4 figures in double line to 50mmx20mm bases with 3 figures in single line. you can see them here.

i think they look OK.

Hi Al.
My French are usually based as 24 figure units with 6 bases of 4 figures each in 2 ranks on a 40mm square base. However, the Voltigeur company, and any Legere unit, are based in pairs on two 40x20 bases, that way I can deploy them in a single rank with double frontage when skirmishing.

I decided long time ago to abandon collective basing and moving to individual bases due to frequent changes in rules by my gamning group. Therefore my 28mm are individually based in 20 x 20mm squares. For GdA bought sabots from Warbases: 4 models per base in 2 ranks and 4 bases (=16 models) to standard sized unit

Same. Here's how I'm doing my 15mm ACW stuff:

You'll note that that stand has both infantry and cavalry on it. That's because I base my cavalry like so:

This works out really well and gives me lots of flexibility in terms of how I want to organize units. I can do 2x4-slot bases for 8-man groups of line infantry or 1x6-slot bases for 6-man skirmishers for Sharp Practice 2, 2x2-slot bases for Gettysburg Soldiers, and I can use the same bases for infantry and cavalry. Additionally, whether the rules system uses individual or full base casualty removal, I'm set either way.
