Do I need to concern myself with relative frontage between infantry, cavalry, and artillery? Should infantry and cavalry use the same base sizes? I know there’s mention in the rules of not having artillery be on too small of a frontage. Any guidance or suggestions?

I believe its up to the players to do decide as long as both sides are the same.

I use 20mm frontage for all my bases such as skirmisher, infantry, cavalry and artillery. Only the artillery have a deeper base size of 40mm.

Might want to have larger bases for skirmishers, for example if your infantry base is 20mm it could be extended up to a 40mm base to mount skirmishers on it. I think this is a good option to extend the length of the skirmish screen.

Do your infantry and cavalry units take up the same total frontage when in line?

Yes, for a standard unit both are 6 bases of 20mm by 20mm side by side. Although i tend to have my cavalry of three bases long and two bases deep. In essence wider than an infantry unit in column which I have as two bases long and three bases deep.

As it stands I'm leaning towards using 3 40x20mm bases per infantry unit, with 4 strips of Baccus 20mm per base, for a total of 48 minis per standard battalion. The cavalry however is a conundrum. I'd prefer not to use movement bases, and I'd also prefer not to have too many bases to move. Decisions decisions!

In essence the same numbers of figures as I use. 40mm by 20mm are easier to move if not using movement trays.

With just three bases, forming a square might be a pain but also column of march may not be possible.

I did start my project doing 2 x20mm by 20mm bases and 2 40mm by 20 bases to do squares.

I only went with 20 by 20 so I could do all. Using the movement trays negate the fiddly side of using the small bases.

Also if you go for 20 by 20, using three bases would equate the same size roughly for rules such as Blucher to try.

Yeah not using movement trays may look better but for me it speeds things up greatly and also when picking up the unit you are picking up the movement base and less chance to remove all those bayonets sticking up.

Lots to consider but am sure either way it will be great once the troops are painted and you get to play some games

I use 2 bases of 40 x 20 and 2 bases of 20 x 20. There for i can use the small bases for flank companies and allows me to put them in square, march column, divisional column.

For large units 2 bases 50 x 20 and 2 bases 25 x 20

I use the same amount of figures on the big bases as the standard after all its the base size not the figure ratio that counts....

I’m building 6mm GdA armies currently.

After chats with Dave i decided to use approx 15mm basing and roughly 1:10 figure ratio

So infantry 72 figs per battalion (3x24) on 6x2cm bases, Cavalry 36 figures (4x9) on 8x2cm bases

That's amazing. That'll be quite the spectacle. So much painting!

Just about to get into General D'Armee myself and picked up the rules.
I've got miniatures on order from Adler and now need to decide on my basing so have the same kind of questions really.

I notice in the pre-packed units Adler sell battalions of 40 figures for infantry and 20 horses for cavalry.
I was considering having my battalions as 40mmx20mm bases with 4 (2 ranks of 5) or 5 (2 ranks of 4) bases per battalion.
Not sure if this would make them too sparse? I want to be able to form up in line, column and square,

I'm also thinking of having all the frontages as the same (40mm?) and just having different depths of base depending on them being infantry, cavalry or artillery.

Do people think this would work?

Thanks
