Regiments fighting close to their discharge date

Post by Hannover »

Am constructing some scenarios of the Overland Campaign in 1864. Some Union regiments were within a couple of months of their discharge date and some brigades contained more than one regiment in this situation. e.g. VI Corps (Sedgewick), Second Division (Getty), 4th Brigade (Eustis) - three of the four regiments were due to discharge - 7th and 10th Massachusetts and 2nd Rhode Island. This is often given as a reason for their relatively poor performance in battle. Has anyone tried some rules to reflect these conditions in certain regiments/brigades or has anyone got suggestions. The battles of the Overland Campaign seldom occur in any scenario publications perhaps due to the difficulty of finding precise and accurate numbers engaged (which I have found a method of overcoming) and so there is relatively little out there.
On a similar point has anyone got suggestions to reproduce the conditions found in the Wilderness in 1864 or in the Chancellorsville Campaign that was fought over largely the same ground?

I would simply class such regiments as "old lags," which would give them decent firing (as reflected in their long experience in the field), but which would make them much less likely to want to be involved in any kind of close assault (either launching or receiving).
