Sniper = Skirmisher?

Post by MarcusColenious »

So a Sniper is defined as part of the Skirmishing rules in Chapter 8. Does that mean that a Sniper Model is considered a skirmisher, and when skirmishers fire at a Sniper must deduct 1 Combat Die?

Yes, a sniper is a very small target and will in all probability be in cover anyway or at least should be.

I'd like to ask a related question: how to treat snipers in other circumstances, eg supporting fire in close combat. Should we treat them as a skirmish unit, able to provide supporting fire as long as they have no other unit to their front in effective range? In general, are snipers a subset of skirmishers?

Yes, Snipers are a subset of Skirmishers, although they have different characteristics, and can provide supporting fire in a charge.

Point 10 on page 39. Supporting Fire. Any unit may provide support fire, provided they are within effective range of the charging enemy or supports and provided they have no other targets whatsoever within effective range to their front.

Was there anything in particular you were looking for in the use of Snipers?

Thanks Tony for the clarification. So does that mean snipers follow all the skirmishers rules on p62, except for Priority Targets? Eg fire and movement, arc of fire, etc? The confusion arises because it seems to be implicit in the rules, rather than explicitly stated.

E2022,

They ignore priority targets.

See the first line of Firing Procedure, p63.
