Sharpening IABSM

Post by Tom Ballou »

There was a Special (I'm not sure which) that had a modification of IABSM! Using the chip/card rules of SP, and applying it to IABSM!

The key is the use of the flag chips/cards and the allowance to activate any unit you wish.

Has anyone played with this? I'm a big fan of CoC as you can choose what unit you activate within the perimeters of the dice. The downside of IABSM and what eventually put me off it was the reliance on card draws. This hybrid really appeals to me.

Reading up on the IABSM Facebook page this question came up.

One of the users there said that there is an article in the TFL Summer Special 2017, page 115: "Sharpening up I Ain't Been Shot Mum!" by Derek Hodge

Going to track this down myself.

Yep, that's the article. Just purchased the PDF. Lots of good stuff in there.

I'm actually playing it slightly differently to what's there. I have dropped allowing the use Command Cards to replicate the effects of bonus cards. And I now normally just use four Command Cards rather than the five I liked when I wrote the article, we were getting too many bonus activations. .

Yes, thanks! I want to play with it and see how it goes but I really like how SP works.

I have tried IABSM with and without the Sharpening, and prefer it without. Just something about the rhythm and feel.

That said, I can see how the Sharpening would work well when you are playing for a limited time, such as on a typical club evening.

I'm quite happy to play it without as well. But most of my friends prefer it.

I've played this a few times. Very easy to learn and very easy to use and helps each side try to implement a given tactic.......but still retains randomness of IABSM

I've tried I twice now. I do believe it speeds up the play a bit, but I also think that we were getting too many bonus moves so am cutting the number of cards down. The SP players also enjoy it.
