Often wondered if the angled armour on the German light armour made any difference in survivability vs bren carrier or M3 half track?

The protection of a universal carrier is pretty limited and you have to be low to get the benefit of it - I remember a friend at school recounting his father had been badly hurt in training by a live round when he wasn’t low enough in the carrier. There’s a bit more space (and I think height) in a Hanomag. In general they’re better at protecting from splinters than fire and airbursts are deadly (as for all open tops).

In 1944, 11th panzer division used old 251 that were not bulletproof.

In the Malayan campaign (1941-42) the Japanese used a small arms round of .256 inch calibre made of hardened steel enclosed in a brass casing which could penetrate the armour of the Marmon-Herrington and Lanchester armoured cars and the armour of the universal carrier. There are also some reports of Japanese small arms fire breaking the tracks of universal carriers thus immobilising the vehicle.

I am thinking all APC should be hard cover only if:
The passengers are firing, only while stationary or moving 1D6 .or
Small apc like carriers and things like protected trucks etc.
Or hard cover and ignore first kill?

These carrier things sound like bloody death traps!!!
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

To be fair they were not designed as APC but rather for recce, ammo up and wounded back, e.g. general utility.

Thinking hard cover at close range. At Long range hard cover and ignore first hit?
