Vehicle Flame Throwers

Post by poiter50 »

As a run up to some Ustilug games, we played a green Russian platoon against Landsers and to try something silly, we used a Kt-26 or OT-130 and then realised that 3 could be taken for the number of support points that the Russian had available which gave him a SL for that supporting unit. The vehicle was listed in the PSC, so we did it. The only issue we had was that it did not say how many phases of fire it could use. So we opted to make it the same as the Infantry FT with 3 shots/phases and it had a 12" range. Some unfortunate rolling from the opposing Pz 38 (t)s saw 2 of them roasted as well as a section of infantry who had lost their way after their JL died. They had fled in to a wooden building which was then toasted, they died and the SL fled out of the burning building to be gunned down by a green LMG across the street. Soon after that, the FT tank exhausted its FT fuel but we said that it was the OT-130, so it had a C0-ax VMG and would therfore roam the battlefield at will as the Germans had no AT capability.

The question still remains, how many FT shots does it have?

Next game it will likely face more AT and there will be less support points available as he disliked the way his infantry were dying despite the SL removing most of the shock and the Germans being unable to kill many of them.

Doesn't answer your shots question, but the Master Arsenal on p37 has Vehicle FTs.

Close range 36", Firepower 16

I'm not sure vehicle flamethrowers have a limit at all.
In general, flamethrowers of all types are too effective against vehicles and troops in the open.
YMMV

All MGs (including LMGs) have a minimal anti-tank capability, but probably not enough when there is a platoon of enemy vehicles roaming the area.

As far as I’m aware there is no limit on the fuel available to vehicle flamethrowers.
To be honest, like Peter, I think they are overpowered, and playing with 3 in the absence of significant enemy entrenchments or fortifications is over the top in my view.

Apart from anything else, to quote Major-General Hobart (possibly!) "What the hell are you doing with my specialist assault vehicles? Using them for general field support? Impossible!"

Manpack FT are limited to 3 shots with vehicles I would limit them to 4 without trailer 6 if they have fuel trailer.

In CoC terms, the Crocodile with a full 400 gallon load would have 100 seconds of 'ammunition', so ought to be unlimited.

Most other vehicles with flamethrowers were far less well provided for and I can't imagine you'd get much dissent if you limited a 251/16 to 4 bursts.

For what it's worth, I played the Ustilug campaign with a friend and had great fun with it. we used the support availability table which makes many supports only have a chance for being available depending on how far away they are in the unit organization. All the AFV available for supports were sufficiently low probability that neither of us even tried using them. My friend played the Soviets with a regular platoon so didn't have as many support points available as with a green platoon. While there are T-26 models available in the support list for the campaign, with only 1/12 chance of getting one my friend never tried. There aren't any OT-26 in th elist for the campaign, only 37mm and 45mm armed T-26.
