Deploying

Post by MLB » Mon Jan 13, 2020 1:32 am

Those of you on Twitter will have seen much of the traffic generated by Henry Hyde recently with regard to a recent game he put on for a friend where his opponent was very unlucky with his deployment, to the extent Henry felt the game was ruined. It inspired me to create a follow up to my post about the patrol phase, this time on deployment. These two elements are some of the most innovative mechanics in the rules and both take a while to fully understand. Hopefully this is of some help to new players. Read it, loved it, re-tweeted it!

I agree with you, patrol phase and deployment/command dice seem to be where most people struggle, or end up seeing it as a "bad mechanic" or a fault of the game system. I really like your all articles on the mechanics and tactics, I try to re-read them from time to time to remind myself of what I should be attempting!

Just played a game where the patrol phase was over in just six moves, with all three German chips in a single stack just 12 inches in from their table edge, ‘shut down’ by an enemy marker. lol.

Well lesson learned, I would've started again allowing the guy to spead his patrol markers out and deploying then 11" from the table edge.

Excellent article, many thanks for posting it. Loads of invaluable advice. Great if it could be stickied some how to the top of this board.

Agreed, I think between Rich's tactical primer and this series of articles, there's no excuse for not having some clue when you come to play :) even though I usually get it all wrong myself.

Don’t worry Doug, you’re not alone, just because I write the articles it doesn’t follow that I always practice what I preach. In fact whenever I do that and it’s in one of the AARs our good friend Mr Trotter is always quick to point it out

Thanks John. I’ve put a link to it in the ‘Getting started....’ thread which is stickied on this board and I’ve also updated the original blog post to include a link, so hopefully new players can find it.

Yes but unfortunately I do not always follow my own sage advice.
I still find myself thinking "This time if I run the tank down the road the bazooka will miss and I will run him over and capture the JOP"
Then as I take another 3 points off my FM I shake my head in wonder at my impatience.....mind you watching Rich and Nick play then boosts my confidence again ;) :P
