Spotting and firing at snipers.

Post by robert.hurley@me.com » Fri Nov 08, 2019 12:03 pm

Hi all. I am a little bit uncertain as to how the sniper rules are applied!
The relevant rule sections:
Quote 1. [2nd last para P43] "When fired on by a sniper a Unit may only respond if they are on Overwatch and covering the area where the sniper is located. They will also need to test to see if they can identify the sniper's firing position".

The next two paras discuss how to calculate the chance of the target (it they are on overwatch) spotting the sniper.

Quote 2. (3rd para p44) "once a sniper is spotted, he may be fired upon at as normal by the Unit which has identified his position..."

So my questions?

1. Per quote 1., it seems that only the target of a sniper (that is on Overwatch covering the area the sniper is in) can only test for spotting the sniper. Therefore if unit A is on Overwatch (and it is covering the area the sniper is in) it cannot try to spot a sniper that fires unit B. Correct?
2. If the above is correct, then if a sniper targets a unit that is not on Overwatch the sniper is not subject to a spotting check. Correct?
3. Per quote 2., only the unit that identifies a sniper can fire at it. So does the sniper remain unidentified to all other units?
Thoughts?

Yes.

The main effect of a sniper is not the occasional casualty they cause, but the impact they have on the effectiveness of their target unit by distracting them from getting on with their job.

P18 of FAQ covers this.

Short answer any team on overwatch may try and spot sniper firing and within arc.

I'm not seeing anything from Scott that could be called a change of the rules? He posted something about getting clarification on snipers and smoke, but I don't think there was anything novel in it.
