Reading suggestions?

Post by Capt Fortier »

I know very little of this period but have been impressed with the rules and keen to give it a go. The rules do provide a good historical overview of early Dark Ages Britain and the rise of the Saxons, but can anyone recommend a reading list (non-fiction and fiction) to help fill out more detail and colour?

There will be a bibliography in the Compendium of both fact and fiction: I will stick the work in progress list of titles in here next time I have the file open. Note that it isn’t by any means complete at this point.

Great list.

On your source list, I'd add 'The Goddodin' and 'Beowulf'.

That's a very helpful list... However, can you clarify?

Read it, but once you’ve read it read the Guy Halsall book. He demolishes Morris’ arguments rather impressively (and with better citations and evidence than Morris has for his own work)

I've ordered both and will be guided by your advice about the sequence for reading ;)

Another good historical fiction to read is the camaloud chronicles by Jack Whyte.

Thanks for recommendation. I'd not come across this series. The look interesting and so first in the chronicle ordered!
