Building my first army.

Post by Crazy Aido »

Hey guys,

I've been looking for a decent company level sci-fi game for some time now and think this ticks all my assorted boxes. (Oh I say...)

I'm putting together my first company level force, a friend of mine is hopefully painting up his vehicles for a game of his own, so when the 'Rona buggers off we can get a game in.

So now to questions or suggestions.

1. How many specialists is too much, is it fair to have more than one of a given type in a force? The back story for my army is they have a huge amount of heavy siege artillery that they regularly call in. How much is too much and when does it stop being fun for my opponent?

2. Demolition charges. I freakin' love demolition charges, (I love flamethrowers too but they are covered thank you very much.) So a previous conversation with someone who plays this game more often than me suggested giving some squads a longer anti tank rating. I was also thinking of using allowing squads with demo charges to reduce the dice you gain from being in cover during assaults. So for light cover the bonus remains the same, heavy cover the bonus doesn't go any higher, maybe for a fortified position the bonus actually reverses or just doesn't exist. Also, give the squad with them a very short range boom weapon( possibly that doesn't suffer a penalty for moving and firing)

3. How heavy is Really heavy tank armour?

Hi
Glad you're going to try them out.
Good that you've got a clear backstory for the army: really helps with the build. Looking forward to posting the battle reports on the Vis Lardica website: we could do with some more Q13 reports on there.
1. I usually have 2-3 specialists, dependent on the backstory. I try to have an Electronic Warfare specialist of some kind, a Medic and, if I have artillery, an FOO.
1.5. Depends whether you are attacking or defending. If you are attacking, then you do have to be careful you don't just mallet the opposition to give you a victory but not a fun game, particularly if they have static positions. Perhaps an initial stomp and then a limited number of fire missions (because everyone wants some!) so that you have to pick and choose your targets with care. If defending, then it's all about getting the attackers to stand still long enough to hit them. Perhaps more fun is to choose a limited number of fire missions at specific pre-targeted points. Just make sure you mark them on your map not on the tabletop (never stand on a an "X" on the ground).
2. Use Chrome rules. Your three options would all work. As long as it is clearly defined and your opponent agrees. What might be fun is to give a disadvantage as well as an advantage: reduce the armour rating of the squad with the demo charges due to the likelihood that they will go off if hit by incoming fire!
3. Use Chrome rules. If you want to play an Ogre like scenario, then do so. Just be aware of game balance. Perhaps give your Ogre a weak point ("aim at the grill, Hans" or the Death Star's Achilles' heel, to mix my references).
Hope that helps
Cheers

The next question was about combat drugs.

Was thinking of having something for combat drugs or fanatical troops or something similar.

For combat drugs I was thinking along the lines of "kill one of your troops to remove 4 shock". I think it represents the risks and benefits of using pretty dodgy pharmaceuticals fairly well.

Also, and I'm sure you've probably heard this constantly, what would you do to represent fairly fanatical or die hard troops? Maybe an increased amount of shock needed to break them?

Also, is there a blank army list excel sheet I can use to put my army together so I can stick it up here? Can't seem to find one anywhere...

Hi
Either of those suggestions would work well for cause-crazed or drug-crazed troops: just make sure that you maintain your consistency and avoid cheese.
For example, for the combat drugs, you might want that ability to only activate on the turn of a particular card (commissar-like Medics boosting a squad!) or as all Actions in one turn. And for fanatics, you should balance that benefit with something negative: smaller numbers perhaps, or complete disintegration if their Big Man is killed.
