Is shameless self-promotion tolerated here?

Post by Henry Turner »

Hi guys!

I've an upcoming Kickstarter for 3D-printable 6-18mm Napoleonics that I find myself keen to holler from the rooftops about... but I don't want to fall afoul of any rules. Not to mention the fact that, as someone whose passion is design and hasn't exactly historically got along with, err, "salesy types" - I have to admit I find marketing somewhat distasteful!

At any rate, though, I make my sole living designing historical miniatures independently so I suppose one has to engage in somewhat unpalatable behaviours - so, if I might ask, is it generally acceptable to post Kickstarter links here? Would anyone be interested in taking a look at 3D-printed Napoleonics?

Here're some of the minis I painted up:

As for me, if anyone's curious, I first started designing model ships as a sort of hobby while I was, err, "trapped" in Russia. In the fallout of a divorce I had to find a constructive way to spend my time so I learned how to sculpt on Blender. Once I finally got back to Blighty, I floated between some odd jobs and spent all my spare time working on more ship Kickstarters. At the start of this year I was finally able to transition over to Kickstarters full-time and now live off those, my Patreon and residual sales I get from a few sites where I sell my files :) It's all still rather new to me, and I'm trying to promote myself without stepping on any toes.

On a side note, I'd really like to find a gaming group for Napoleonics as, now that Lockdown's sort of relaxing, I feel like I can sort of socialise again! I was out in Russia for six years and only returned last July, mid-Lockdown, so I still feel a smidge transplanted and I think finding a gaming group around Surrey would do wonders for feeling at home again!

...I'm really digressing, aren't I?

As a moderator and no stranger to shameless self-promotion myself, I have no objection to this post!

1) Quite interested in your ship models. Anything suitable for Coastal Patrol (the TFL equivalent of Warlord's "Cruel Seas") in 1:300 or 1:600?

2) Whereabouts in sunny Surrey are you?

Thankee! Glad to be among likeminded self-promoters; aren't we just emulating the great Nelson?

At any rate, the project went live (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ag ... -stl-files)!

I'll write a more detailed pitch for it elsewhere on here, but I hope it'll be of interest to at least a few people!

1. Cool :) As you might've seen, I have a soft spot for naval stuff and it's where I got started as a modeller. Sadly, as of now, the furthest I've got with "modern" ships is pre-Dreadnoughts, so nothing coastal yet or approaching WW2.

2. Weybridge! Like any successful budding creative, I moved back in with my parents. Alas it's a rather sleepy area!

I'm at the other end of the spectrum - my children are threatening to move back in with me!!! The Baroness is threatening to go "full Weegie" on them.

I'm actually down in Haslemere, on the Surrey/Hants/Sussex border. Unfortunately, I game mostly at the Wessex club in Colbury, near Southampton which would be a bit of a trek for you (it's just over an hour's drive for me), I suspect; there's another Wessex club in Winchester and we have some membership cross-over with them. There are also two Solent clubs in the Pompey/Southampton area - we're not terribly original in terms of names down here! I suspect your nearest club would be Guildford, which meet on Monday nights, if memory serves - contact Black Hat Miniatures and talk to Mike, who is quite active there. There used to be a very good club in Surbiton called The Bun Shop, but I don't know if it's still running.

I only recently got into naval gaming (late 2019) when a fellow-member at Wessex suggested using four different Napoleonic rulesets to play the same scenario and compare the results. Very interesting exercise. A couple of other members have assembled some Cruel Seas flotillas (flotillae?) but I'm hoping to convert them to the TFL equivalent, as it's much more of a "beer and pretzels" type of game (ie more fun).

Let me know how you get on.
