Act like Roman Auxilia. They are in groups of 8 and can switch between close order and skirmish order. Equipped with two javelin and Spears as mixed weapon troops. Better than skirmishes but not as good a Roman Auxilia!

Thanks mate.

At the very least I now know how to organise a force without overspending :)

So, I'll caveat this by saying I know it's not out yet and I have had no visibility of the rules, but given the likelihood of the entire country's social calendar going up in smoke for the next couple of months, I've been trying to figure out (mainly using sharp practice and the info in this thread) a bit of an idea of what models will be needed for a comprehensive imperial roman list. I've come up with this:

Legate/ Tribune (Level 4)
Aquilifer
Imaginifer
1 Group of 8 Praetorians

Centurion (Level 3)
Optio (Level 2)
Tesserarius (Level 1)
Signifer
Cornicen
4 Groups of 8 Legionaries

Auxiliary Centurion (Level 2)
Auxiliary Optio (Level 1)
[No Auxiliary Tesserarius on the basis that he's just among the ranks - Auxiliary officers ranking lower than legionary ones in my head]
Auxiliary Signifer
Auxiliary Cornicen
2 Groups of 8 Auxiliaries
1 Group of 8 Auxiliary Archers
1 Group of 8 Slingers

Auxiliary Decurion (Level 1)
Auxiliary Draconarius
1 Group of 6 Auxiliary Cavalry

Does this seem like a sensible bunch of models to go and order before royal mail start cancelling deliveries?

Cheers lads.

I would be inclined to take a second group of Praetorians, on the basis that in other Lardie rules, you need more than one group to make a formation, and formations are important. Of course those that have play-tested the draft would know for sure.

Definitely take a second group of Praetorians for all the reasons Doug says. However don’t expect super heroes! Praetorians were over dressed dandy’s who were mainly an imperial bodyguard rather than hardened fighters!

Thanks Doug, Don. Consider an additional group of 8 Praetorians added to the list!

Don - absolutely. I’m interested in them for the opportunity to paint nice purple shades, rather than in game performance (although it would be nice if they had some kind of psychology rules that reflect their willingness to depose their charges when the going gets tough!)
