I think you could even look at some of the early Government forces in Peter Pig's Mexican Revolution series - these are wearing rough uniforms and caps - though armed with rifles cf. SMGs

Wikipedia says they were used by Leichtgeschütze-Abt. (Light Gun Battalion) 423 and 424 in the Arctic (20. Gebirgsarmee) and in Army Group Centre in Russia.
