BUA defence in General d'Armee

Post by gerryoz1 » Wed Oct 23, 2019 6:57 am

Hi,
I've just started with these rules and played the scenario, from the rules, with a friend.
Our questions are:
How many battalions can be placed in the main village (the objective) ?
If more than one battalion, (we used 4 :o ), how many defend an assault?
(We realised that this made the town impossible to take)
When defending towns, is there a guide to how many defending battalions?
Thanks,
Gerry

from page 62:
For game purposes, there are just two types of Built Up Area:
1. Built Up Areas. These are normal villages. Each BUA can be garrisoned by one battalion. If players wish to represent larger villages, then simply place two adjacent BUAs on the table. Each is treated as a separate BUA for garrison and melee, but enables an attacker to gain a “section” while the enemy holds onto the other.
2. Strongpoints. This category covers La Haye Sainte or château type
farms and large, substantial churches or similar buildings, with high walls. Strongpoints can be garrisoned by one battalion. Strongpoints must be designated as such at the beginning of the game.
It seems pretty straight forward, so a max of 2 battalions.

Hi Gerry,
Welcome to General D'Armee.

As John says, each BUA may only be garrisoned and defended by a single infantry battalion. In turn it can only be attacked by a maximum of 2 battalions in the first round of melee. See page 91.
If the melee goes to a second round then both the garrison and attackers can be reinforced as per pages 63 and 90, but once the final outcome is determined only a single battalion can remain in the BUA.

In the scenario in the rules they are normal sized BUAs so can have a single battalion in each.
For larger towns they need to be divided up into individual BUAs each area having its own garrison.

I greatly appreciate the welcome. 😃
Johns, thanks very much, too, for your quick responses. That clears it up very well.
Now I'm off to rally the Grande Armee and this time I'll have a better chance to capture the village.

G'day Dave, I'm in WA, an hour south of Perth.

Welcome to GdA Gerry! We absolutely love the game and it’s the main go to rules for all my Napoleonics.

What scale are you using?

Cheers
