Pre Game Sequence

Post by Steve McG » Thu Sep 12, 2019 9:40 pm

Hi all

A little while back it was noted that there was some contradiction/confusion with the pre game sequence. Not only was it spread over a number of pages but on p73 it talks about the need to Select Support before doing the Patrol Phase. However on p74 - 79 it clearly has the Force Support being chosen after the Patrol Phase.

During the discussion it was noted either way could but there was a consensus made and eventually posted to the FAQ. The discussion is in this thread.

https://toofatlardies.co.uk/forum/viewt ... e&start=30

This, according to john de terre neuve allowed the following Sequence

Game Start Order
1. Place Patrol Markers and make free moves, if any
2. Dice for Force Morale
3. Play Patrol Phase
4. Place JOP's
5. Dice for and select supports
6. Place fixed defenses.
7. Adjust Engineer section/squad if any selected
8. Throw Command Dice

note: entrenchments are placed when the team deploys.

This worked fine for most us until the 1940 Handbook. In some discussion here locally, it has been astutely pointed out by Trailape
that on p109 of the 1940 Handbook it has a Stuka Phase "Immediately before the Patrol Phase". This is pretty specific and would have sequence as follows:

Post 1940 Handbook Game Start Order
1. Place Patrol Markers and make free moves, if any
2. Dice for Force Morale
3. Dice for and select supports.
Note: specific to ‘Blitzkrieg 1940:
STUKA ATTACKS RESOLVED
4. Play Patrol Phase
5. Place JOP's
6. Place fixed defences.
7. Adjust Engineer section/squad if any selected
8. Throw Command Dice
Note: entrenchments are placed when the team deploys

It could and has been argued that Support Choices are better done after the Patrol Phase for lots of reasons. But the Recent Handbook seems to say otherwise.

So what is the best way forward? Stick with the Start Order agreed a while back and the put on the FAQ or use the 1940 Start Order?

Over to you good sirs !!!

We’ve always picked supports before the patrol phase!

Since I was the original poster, I will make a comment and indeed the intiial seqeunce is correct.

I subsequently wrote another sequence specifically for the 1940 Handbook and is as follows:
Game Setup Order 1940
Play Stuka Bombardment if any
Place Patrol Markers and make free moves, if any
Dice for Force Morale
Dice for and select supports
Play Patrol Phase
Place JOP's
Place fixed defences.
Adjust Engineer section/squad if any selected
Throw Command Dice
This is how we play 1940 games

John,

I hoped you would chip in with a few comments … so thanks.

An interesting Sequence. Can you share the workings of your mind on this …. as long as it is not too scary that is.

Of course the issue is where and when should Stukas should go as this needs to be bought with 4 x Support Points.

Thanks again

Steve

I would prefer it read "immediately after the patol phase"
If you put a JOP in a building and it was set on fire tough luck 😋

Sure, but there's no reason you have to allocate all the rest of your support points at that stage.

If the German player wants to Stuka the board up, do that before the patrol phase, play the patrol phase as normal, then make your support picks like normal.

It’s not just the timing of Stuka attacks, but more generally significant field defences (wire, minefields, roadblocks?, and in some PSC scenarios terrain features, such as marshes).

These need to be declared by the defender before the attacker selects support, and it always seems to make sense if they are placed before the patrol phase, especially if the provide cover, and therefore may affect JoP positioning.

Well the Lardies have just played Taking the Gembloux Gap part 5 and the way they played it was.

1. Dice for and select supports
2. Dice for Force Morale
3. Place Patrol Markers and make free moves, if any
4. Play Patrol Phase
5. Place JOP's
6. Place fixed defenses. ? N\A
7. Adjust Engineer section/squad if any selected ? N\A
8. Throw Command Dice
