LMG against vehicles

bearing in mind we are still getting to grips with the game, I noticed after my last game, on page 42, that infantry LMGs can fire against vehicles. is this done in the same way as other infantry fire in that the number of firing dice are rolled (for instance an MG 34 would roll 8 dice)?
Asking the question as it is distinctly different to AT fire.

Hi Simon,
You can fire an LMG against an armoured vehicle in an attempt to drive it off but the mechanics are completely different to normal fire. Basically the vehicles owner rolls a number of dice equal to the AFV armour rating looking for at least 1 save, ie roll a 5 or 6. If successful then the LMG has had no effect, but if he fails you then roll on the 0 Net Hits Table to see what the AFV does which could result in it taking Shock and backing off.

Obviously this is likely to work most often against lightly armoured AFV’s like half tracks and armoured cars but you never know your luck.

Firing at soft skin vehicles is done as normal counting any crew or passengers as in soft cover, but if sufficient ‘6’s are rolled the vehicle could be damaged.

Pg42 section 9.3.3 of the rule book:

Small arms fire against armoured vehicles is generally entirely ineffective. However, in some situations infantry may attempt to drive off enemy armour by using their light or medium machine guns against vision ports and similar. This will only ever be effective when the weapon is firing at close range and is not Pinned or Broken.
The machine gun Team must be activated and spend a whole Phase attempting this. The target vehicle will roll its armour dice as normal (see Section 11, Fire Against Vehicles). If the vehicle achieves no saves, he will roll a D6 on the table in the Anti‐Vehicle Fire section showing the effect of equal hits against saves on the vehicle damage table appropriate for its type.

Basically nust go straight to the AFV rolling its armour saves as if it had been hit, if it fails to make a single save then go to the table and roll result.

Are there any special rules for firing LMGs vs wheeled armoured cars? Can’t recall seeing any.

Armoured cars usually have rubber tyres which are surely vulnerable to LMG fire? Seen plenty of photos of knocked out armoured cars with deflated/punctured tyres, albeit usually caused by mines.

Lots of armoured cars had run-flat tyres or entirely solid tyres. I suspect they weren't quite so easy to stop as you might think.

Was aware of these run-flat and solid tyres, but I don’t know how available they were in 1939/40. Have seen numerous photos of Kfz 13, SdKfz 221/222 and Polish wz. 34 armoured car wrecks with deflated tyres. Most of these early armoured cars were just converted trucks.

Short answer is No there are no special rules for such circumstances. Probably an unnecessary level of granularity and better to keep it simple and the same for all AFVs. An armoured car is more likely to be driven off as it is, which might be down to crew fear of bursting its tyres. Who knows.
