20mm German SS Oakleaf - Opinions sought

Post by GavinP »

Looking for some opinions on whether these look OK. 20mm Xan miniatures bought through Empress. I'm trying to do Summer Oakleaf as the majority of the time these will be used they'll be in Normandy I think (need to work through both the Martlet and Scottish Corridor PSC), but I'm just not convinced. I've used Vallejo Violet Brown as the base, with SS Black Brown Camo with SS Bright Green as the dots. The bit I'm not sure about is the base, it just looks a bit meh. Might be I've not covered enough of it, or it might need a dark wash before applying the brown and green, or it might need something entirely different.

Feel free to be as critical as you like.

I would use vallejo light brown as the base (70.929), or a mix of both colours. Try to get something like this:

And congrats for buying Xan´s miniatures. There are more in the pipeline.

They're nice figures in the picture but look more like Autumn to me. Far too orange a look for the summer oakleaf.

You can add a bit of light brown to the violet brown to darken it. It'll be a bit darker but no so orange.

Much happier now. I ran a wash of Devlan Mud over the Violet Brown and it went much more to my taste. Still could have done better but considering I've barely painted a 20mm figure in several years I'm happy enough.

In my opinion the splotches are to far apart and I would have a few smaller ones between the larger ones there is to much of the brown showing.

But looking much better.

I suspect that you're right. The later batches I made larger dark patches to begin with which look better, but they aren't all that close together you're right. I still have a few to do which I will try some different ideas. Thanks for the reply.

Hello Gavin,

I took Vallejo saddle Brown as a base for the summer pattern:
