very likely entirely down to me, cavalry dropped on a flank, while the main body were still off the table (I was hoping the Romans would move forwards a bit nearer an actual ambush point) - had the cavalry not had my usual dice they would have seen off a Legion (hitting them in the rear) and likely done similar to an Auxiliary unit plus causing the others to turn simply to defend from them as they sped off like they had stolen the horses.

Q: what sort of model is good for Stewards? having trouble finding decent looking (i.e. not Warlord) unarmoured cavalry for Gauls, for that matter slingers that are plastic or metal and not resin

My good self and Dale have broken many a gaming convention over the years.
Often opponents in mixed tourney setting stare bemusedly at us as we deploy then have a worried chat thinking they must have missed a cunning plan we had.

2 or 3 round in they realise it is just us as usual

Dale came very close if the mob had arrived a turn earlier I only had one legion group facing them and he would have then broken into the other two one of which was pointing in the opposite direction

Fortunately Dale knew he needed to let me win to keep me interested so discussed the situation with his dice that then lay down for the rest of the battle.

I bought a standing horse from somewhere, then just used three spearman types who looked like they were standing around rather than leaping about. Mind are two crusader figures and one Foundry. They look like they are standing with a spare mount and spare javelins.

I know what you mean about Warlord. Most of their Celtic stuff looks like it’s come straight out of a club in Brighton. Lots of very odd contortions and gyrations.

Rich.

The plastic ones do look a bit odd with the arms held out sideways, especially the cav though I think they may have some new sculpts.
I have some of their metal slingers and metal Javelin guys and they are fab.

EIR figs are great and for my taste the only real Roman's are EIR.

I expect Infamy with become another of the regulars systems we play, already have some ideas for deployment points and my marching camp may even come out to play.

planning to check other companies out for a few models, would love a few crouching/kneeling Gauls, perfect for ambush points and similar.

raid on a camp could be good too, need to make some of the terrain bits Gauls can have

I have a kneeling Gaul on one Ambush Point, but it was a major conversion job with a set of WWII plastic German infantry legs. Crazy that nobody does them.

Still thinking about my Stewards, but for the slingers I went with Victrix Balearic Slingers hands and slings on Victrix Unarmoured Gallic Warriors, photo on my website:

There are some kneeling figures in one of the Celtic plastic chariot sets (I think Warlord)
