Cavalry base sizes?

Post by Ari Marsson »

I'm just starting to work out my Gallic force and wondering how others are basing their cavalry?

Singly, in pairs, in threes...

What base size are you using?

I'm not keen on sabot bases*, so for my foot I'll be using a multi-figure base of all 10 models with shock and casualty dice-holder built in as I do for SP, slingers will be based individually.

(*I really, really don't like the 'doorstep' look of most sabots)

I´ll do it in pairs, with a couple in single bases for casualties. 50mmx50mm in pairs, 25mmx50mm for singles.

Basing mine singly as they will also be used for other systems.
Cavalry are going on pill shaped bases and will probably end up in a three pill sabot.
Interests

Getting slaughtered by a surprising amount of opponents.

As mentioned, I do 2 x 2"x 2" for a pair, then 2 singles on a 1" x 2" base. Perfect for change.

Greg, if you're going for 3 x 25mm cavalry bases = 75/80mm unit width, are you using approx 80mm wide base for your foot?

singly on 50 x 25mm pills, and then a sabot for 2 bases.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. ;)

FWIW, I try to use materials to make my sabots as thin as possible. Generally, this is a vinyl magnetic sheet for the base (I put all of my minis on fender washers) and heavyweight cardstock for the frame. This is how they look with 15mm ACW troops: Image
At 28mm, these would be even more subtle. You can even bevel the edges if you want, although I find that that actually makes them hard to pick up and move - which defeats the whole point of a sabot base in the first place!

I've used 50mm/2" square. I don't use sabots for cavalry. I put two bases up front and one behind, so a reverse wedge affair. That keeps the frontage about right.

To be honest, I've stopped using sabots.

For anything other than skirmishers (which i base individually) I now use a group base made from two layers of 1mm MDF, with the top layer cut smaller than the bottom one so it gives a very low edge profile.
i then build in a dice holder for recording shock and casualties, as shown in this photo on my FB page:

Thanks Richards, that seems the best way to go...
