Ignorance and prejudice is not stupidity. And I'm not daft enough to claim cultural superiority over anyone. The respondents to that poll that others want to laugh at may have been stupid and/or ignorant. But then there are a lot of things that would be considered common knowledge in other cultures that you or I would be ignorant of.

I am just mildly surprised that in a country with universal schooling, they would have learned their arithmetic without any knowledge of where the numbers came from, but then, I don't set the US syllabus.

Worryingly Doug, I'd wager that my kids wouldn't know this particular fact. And I do find that worrying.

I'm seeing them both today. I'll ask.

Arabic numbers used today in the Middle East actually look like this:

٠ ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥ ٦ ٧ ٨ ٩ ١٠

But they also sometimes use the Western "Arabic" Numbers - which as I previously posted actually originate from India - usually in tourist areas and road signs.

Well, I asked both of my daughters and they looked at me as though I was insane. Not a bloody clue. Even when I explained it, they had no idea what I was talking about.

I was on the phone to my daughter and her partner reading this thread and asked them - they were fully aware of the origin of the numbering system - admittedly they are 26 and 27.

Whoever invented the Zero, they got nothing out of it!

If you must use the Zero, make sure it's the ground attack version :)
