I’ve ordered my Victrix auxiliary force, plus some Warlord auxiliary archers and a bolt thrower (I’ll convert some crew into auxiliary crew)
Plus I’ve got the movement trays from Charlie Foxtrot.

Is it correct that Auxiliaries can choose to fight in skirmish formation?
And if so do I need different movement trays when they do?

What troop support would you suggest for an all auxiliary force?
Don’t say legionaries!
Like I said I’ve got a bolt thrower and also a cart?

Gallic cavalry. They give you some punch and operate to keep the hairy buggers off your flanks.

I do use different movement trays, but you can just move them individually when skirmishing.

I thought by the time the legions started equipping auxiliary units that Gallic warriors would just get recruited into those units?

Generally speaking you are correct. There was a formal recruitment into Auxiliary units with the promise of citizenship through service, but it wasn't overnight, and there was a difference between units recruited as Auxiliaries into the formal army structure, and 'allied' units of Gauls, Spaniards etc.

There was an overlap in the period we are talking about, as army reforms happened to create the Augustan army. It took time before many of the recently absorbed territories saw enough advantages to join as auxiliaries, but there was still the opportunity to be warriors in accord with their existing traditions as allies. The parallels of later absorption into empire for Scots, Sikhs etc are striking.

Hi Tim,
It will depend a bit on the time frame you decide on for your force and who your opponents will be. We don’t know for certain but there is likely to have been a transition as the Augustan reforms kicked in. So you are probably right that Auxiliary cavalry would be the better choice. it would definitely have been the case by the time of the Claudian invasion Of Britain.

I like my armies to be a nod in the right direction for history.
But I’m not a rivet counter.
I suppose it’s only a matter of days before the book lands, and I can look at support options.
Maybe I can just add more auxilia.

I’m starting with 5 units of Roman Legion Infantry, 2 units of Auxiliary Infantry and 2 units of Auxiliary cavalry. All Victrix.

My Caesarian force is 2 Roman legions, 2 Roman legion recruits, Gallic Cavalry, and options for veteran infantry, Spanish Caetrati/Scutari, or Roman Velites.

I've got 4 groups of Auxilia foot, 2 groups of Auxilia cavalry, 3 groups of Legionaries, a group of Auxilia archers and some slingers that I'm having second thoughts on.

Originally I'd envisioned a Legate or some other higher-up from Rome visiting so he has his legionary escort attached to the frontier auxilia that are doing all the real work.

I'll start by painting up the Cohors Equitata and go from there I think, I may have over-egged it!

'over-egged' ? No such thing for a wargamer... You'll find a use for all those figures someday
