Hi Tim,
My tuppenceworth.
"Unformed" does not mean without any formation, it's just a formation which has lost some of its internal cohesion. That's why an unformed unit reforms back into the formation it started in or an unformed line still fires as a line.

So to answer your question an "unformed column" is still a column and benefits from that modifier but also takes the penalty for being unformed in my view.
