Column of Mob ??

Post by Sgt Steiner » Tue Aug 01, 2017 11:01 pm

Hi

When units retire or retreat rules state they become 'column of mob', what exactly is this and how do you show it on table ?

In game today I had a Brigade suffer a Retire outcome on Faltering table. The units started in various formations Line, Attack Column and Square so we were unsure how they ended up at end of Retire moves ?
We decided to put them into Unformed Assault Columns but not sure if this is correct as no definition of Column of Mob

Cheers

Sgt.,

That sounds like a good option. It would show a workable footprint and a good representation of the unformed mass and clusters of troops.

Basically it just means that they have lost all formation and become an unruly mass. A disorganised Assault Column would be fine to show this as Scott says. Just remember it isn't an "Unformed Assault Column" in terms of the rules, it has no formation until it rallies and reforms.

Hi yes that is how we reasoned things to occur but might need defined as such in rules ie does or does not count as a Column for purposes of Charge modifiers etc

While some clarification in an FAQ might help, I don't think any change in the rules are needed.
The definition of Retire on page 83 says explicitly that the unit has lost its formation, so no modifier for being in column could apply if it was subsequently charged.
Meanwhile a unit which Retreats cannot stand against a charge and will always rout, see 4d on page 84.
