My standard practice is to measure from the centre front face of the firing unit to the nearest point on the target. Avoids arguments about whether an individual base is in range or not.

Infantry ranges in the rules are pretty generous (15cm = 150m).

John,
When conducting defensive fire against a charge from supports quite often the defensive line will have figures outside the 45 degree firing arc. How do you handle this?

Mike,
In GD'A you fire as a unit not by individual element, hence why I think it makes sense to measure range from the centre. if any part of a target falls within the 45 degree fire arc as measured from the ends of the supporting unit then the whole supporting unit fires even if it has figures outside the arc. It is assumed that a unit can make minor adjustments to bring fire to bear. This is discussed under Arc of Fire on page 73.

Of course that assumes that the defending brigade is Steady, if it is Hesitant units can only fire directly ahead but the whole unit still fires if any part of the target falls within that reduced arc.

John,
That's a big help thanks. What was confusing me was page 75 and the restricted fire section.

Mike,
Glad to help. The rule on page 75 only applies if actual Line of sight is physically blocked for some reason.

Hi John,
yes, the best way is to measure from the centre front face of the firing unit to the nearest point on the target.
Approved !
