Echeloned columns fired on at oblique angle

We had a situation where a nicely echeloned brigade was shot at by artillery at a 45 degree angle, thus giving the appearance, from the batteries viewpoint, that they where now massed.

How do you deal with this situation?

Depending on the situation the artillery might be entitled to roll for bounce through fire, but I wouldn't treat the columns as massed if they did not meet the definition in the rules for that condition.

Remember appearances on the tabletop can be misleading as wargame units tend to be much deeper than their historical counterparts.
