Gaines Mill Scenario

Post by hayeswauford » Mon Sep 24, 2018 9:02 pm

Here is the OB I used for the initial assault at Gaines' Mill from around 2:30-3:30 PM on 27 June 1862

Note that for ease of first time use of all players I made all regiments regular size so 4/8/12 casualty levels. I couldn't find sources showing anything OTHER than rifled muskets so kept weapons simple too.

I set up forces using this map: https://www.battlefields.org/learn/maps ... -230-330pm

Objective
The CSA intended to break through Porter's line in order to turn the flank of the entire Union Army as they cautisouly retreated. In reality the Confederates ran up against very difficult terrain and it created a piece-mealed attack. The first wave didn't see any real success and it took follow up Divisions, notably Hoods Texans on Porter's left flank, to break the line.

For convention game purposes I secretly recorded that the CSA had 4 hours of playing time to break through and have 3 good order regiments behind the line of the works. At the 4 hour mark the Confederates conceded on their own realizing they had done no better than their historical counterparts.
