Keren 1941 game - IABSM battle report

Postby James Morris » Tue Dec 31, 2013 7:04 am

Last weekend I played a scenario recreating one of the British attacks during the Battle of Keren in East Africa on my new mountain terrain. We used 28mm models (I know 15mm makes more sense but I love 28s...) so we played a couple of modifications: we used 40mm as 1" (I made some measuring sticks to make this easy, and also used 1 platoon card to move each section, both of which worked very well indeed.

I'd written the scenario for this one based on A. J. Barker's book 'Eritrea 1941', but if you haven't seen it, Chris Stoesen's IABSM PDF supplement 'No Ruddy Picnic' is a really good resource for the East Africa Campaign.

You can see a full report and lots of pictures on my friend Paul's Scrivsland blog at

Great game and brilliant looking table - you wouldn't happen to have a picture of the whole table, as I would love to see how the whole mountain looks like.

I can also second the "No Ruddy Picnic", good stuff!

Cheers all! We'll be trying other rulesets for this set-up, as well, but my gut feeling is that IABSM is the best fit.

There won't be any full pics of the set-up until after Salute (April 12th), I'm afraid. I'm also planning to do an article for Wargames Illustrated too, so can't put too much online at the moment.

East Africa is one of my favorite theaters. Your game looks fantastic. Thanks for the plug.

Anybody know who makes 1/72 Ethiopian and/or Somali figures for this period? I know Bloodaxe makes some 15mm that would work - Ethiopian Neftenya at http://www.bloodaxeminiatures.com/products.shtml
