British Flamethrowers before Life Bouy type?

Post by Fuzzy »

Hello all,

Both the British 1940 list and 1941 North Africa list offer a flamethrower team as a support option.
However I cannot find any reference to their use before 1943 when the Lifebouy type was introduced.
I have found reference to the "Marsden" flamethrower but cannot find a picture and it is mentioned that they made around 1500 but they were never issued to combat troops.

Can anyone offer supporting evidence that the Brits used man portable flamethrower in 1940 or early North Africa??

Cheers
Neil

I don't think they did. They were developing one based on the German model at the end of the Great War, but dropped it in 1918 when it ended. It's probably a C+P error when the support list was created.
