Small arms fire vs softskin vehicles

Post by Truscott Trotter » Sun Jan 19, 2020 7:59 pm

Now I understand the basic rules for this procedure- roll dice blah blah - add up sixes roll on net hits etc.

My question to is what happens when the target is not one truck but a section carried in jeeps or on motorcycles?

Do you:
1.) Just hit one vehicle and the others go unscathed?
2.) Hit all vehicles with the smae net hits achieved?
3.) Spread the hitz evenly accross the vehicles in thw group?
4.) Something else entirely?

TIA

I would use the standard rules for firing.
Pick a team as target including the vehicle it’s in, any other team within 4” shares the hits but only the target vehicle is affected by any ‘6’s rolled. Seems simplest.

Thanks John, I will take that as a No 4 then - not one I had thought of but worth considering.
It certainly seems odd to have no hits on other teams at all (No1.)

Me too. Chances are the other vehicles will be more than 4" away, so singling out just one vehicle should be pretty easy. The firer always has the option of splitting their fire to target more than one.

If you are moving as a group of vehicles do you not have to be within 4" to do so?

Had to dig that passage out (p.39 if you do too), and to me it reads that the soft-skin damage table roll is in addition to any hits inflicted on the troops riding them (which would be spread as normal), especially since the mechanic is the same as how H.E. can damage buildings or crew-served weapons. I'd apply the roll to one motorcycle or car if you've got a group of them, but would consider wrapping any extras around to start over again (although if you've suffered that many "6"s, you've already lost a team, so it probably doesn't matter).

Ahh thanks Levi - thats prob what John meant, now I reread this bit

They roll as normal for the effect of fire,
treating any target as in light cover.

Its all clear.

In my defence all I can say is we normally don't have anyone stupid enough to run softskins but it was a BK campaign ...and I had a squad on motorcycles....and there was this log straight road....and no traffic cops in sight......brrrrm

From what I have read being shot at while in a moving softskin was very bad news for the passengers - if they didn't die in a hail of bullets they died when the vehicle crashed. (Unlike Bolt Action where they are almost always unharmed :x )

I have done the exact same thing! (Probably why it was fresh to mind.) Was it on "The Open Road" from "Many Rivers to Cross"? :D They have their uses from time to time.

Which reminds me, should really read up to figure out how tank riders work...

Yes it was and I won that one by rushing the M/C followed by the A/c down the road 3D6 and then used an interrupt for another 3D6
So confident after that we tried it again on the bridge mission too- not so good that time

They don't in CoC ....at least in the standard rules.

In the Winterstorm Campaign they talk about it but no special rules
I would saythey count as in cover - argument cover hard or soft, cannot fire while mounted and must dismount if shot at.
8 men max per tank?

I don't think it was really motorcycles that the softskin rules had in mind. I think I'd just use the normal rules for shooting at units ie: you target a whole team not just one vehicle.
