Looking for scenario suggestions - desert

Post by DougM » Fri Jan 17, 2020 5:22 pm

Hi all, I have a game planned for next weekend and my regular opponent has suggested we try a Desert game - just asking if anyone has any suggested scenarios suitable for a one-off game that would be a little more interesting than a simple 'take the objective' encounter? I only have DAK & 8th Army painted up, so Italians are out, but we could do USA.

Consider using the Swift to Support or Blitzkrieg missions from the 1940 handbook for one of the pursuit phases of the desert war. The fighting at Derna in 1941 is a good example, with the DAK trying to cut the coastal highway to prevent the British retreat to Tobruk.

Also, if you have enough trucks, there's a cool convoy ambush scenario in the Winter Storm supplement "The 0430 to Kotelnikovo".

Do you have some German tanks? If so, the Totensonntag PSC from the 2019 Lard Annual might interest you (full disclosure - I wrote it, so I'm biased ;) )

I recently ran a "Retreat from Mersa Matruh" game to the tune of the "Going with a Bang" scenario from the Blitzkrieg 1940 handbook, only what the Brits were trying to sabotage were not culverts but fuel depots. That was loads of fun.

USA vs Germans is great for Tunisia - anything around the battle for Kasserine Pass works well (though for that era the Americans should probably be rated as Green). Something like "Delaying Action" or "Hasty Defense" to represent the inexperienced American units desperately trying to hold off the German counterattack would be fitting.

Thanks chaps, I shall look into those (having all the supplements and PSC :) )

Incidentally, if you are looking for NOT Chevy, cheap trucks that look not bad when fettled and painted up, you could do worse than look here:

select option 2, free postage, and 5% off for three or more. I added milliput to bulk out the tyre profile, a bit of stowage, and they are currently awaiting airbrushing for the Malaya campaign.

Scale out about 1/56 - I will put up a comparison shot on my site a bit later on.

I know a US player that might like them, pity I have enough Soviet trucks as they would do for them too.
