Definitely a lost opportunity, IMO.

I have wondered about Skirmish Sangin and I'm OK with mostly Afghanistan. My fictional country (Zangarostan) is going to be part Somalia/Yemen and part Afghanistan. I've heard good things about the rules, but just haven't bought them yet.

Were any public playtest materials ever distributed? Or detailed after action reports? I'd be very curious to see what tweaks were made for modern gaming.

Not as such if you subscribed to the yahoo playtest group you received a beta copy. Not really tweaks to WW2 CoC so much as a new game.

Thats a bit of a downer, was really looking forward to then. I even bought a whole bunch of Empress moderns in anticipation. Is there any way to revive this project?

I played Force on Force, No end in sight and another couple of rules, but none gave me the lard touch in modern fighting...

I'm actually playing with Spectre Operation.
It's a decent game but, no lardy style...

Force on Force has some very nice ideas and mechanics. The concept of different sided dice to reflect unit capabilities like training and reaction time is inspired and works particularly well for asymmetric warfare. On the other hand the command and control elements are superficial at times and there’s something missing in the way that the game flows (can’t quite put my finger on it but the dynamic doesn’t quite feel right). I too was hoping Fighting Season might offer a better set of rules.

Along the same lines, is the CoC variant covering the First Indo-China War on the horizon? Perhaps Easter 2020?

I did this with Bolt Action, 2 years ago.

I plan to work on a CoC version.
DMZ leads the way on terrain and special rules, so it will be easier for me.
My main work will be to set up army and support lists...

It's unfortunate that Fighting Season is on the backburner. I was really hoping it was out and available.
