BEF pull on sleeve

Can someone help me with info on the short pull on coloured sleeve on the BEF trooper.
I think its got something to do with denoting the unit its in?

Hi John, it's an arm band for detecting the presence of gas. The colour you've used is spot on ;)

Yup a not very effective gas indicator they had them for BEF vehicles too

Yes, I suspect a sudden inability to breathe might have been a more reliable indicator.

They still issue pads of paper for a similar purpose. Physical signs are not always immediate.

Btw, the proper name for this piece of uniform is a "brassard". You see them a lot on folks like MPs. You pull them up your arm and there's a loop that attaches to your epaulette, so you should probably paint it going right the way up to the shoulder.
