Len Tracy noted that "most US units at the start of the Solomon Islands campaign were still armed with bolt-action rifles." What of the National Guard units that were deployed to New Guinea (32nd Division) or Guadalcanal (infantry regiments that landed beginning in October 1942? Were any equipped with M1 Garand rifles for the initial deployment? TIA

Units fighting on Guadalcanal had bolt-action rifles, when they were withdrawn they were issued with Garand rifles.

The Army units had M1s in the Infantry elements. The TOE was based around the M1.

With the exception of those units that were serving as garrisons on the various islands at the start of the war, all US Army units were equipped with the M1 Garand.
