Breaking Team w/SL

Had a great game of CoC today with a 2nd test of my Winter War Armoured Column scenario.

The Finns had a AT Rifle Team with a SL within 4". The team took fire and broke.

We played it that the SL had to break with the team, thus 2 FM tests were taken.

Is this correct? It is essentially cost the Finns the game.

Hi John,

No, the SL would count as attached, so falls back with the team when they break, but you don't make a FM roll for him then, only the team breaking. You roll for him if he is still attached at the end of the turn and they rout off the table because they are still broken. He can move away from them whenever he is activated before then, or try to rally enough shock off them that they will not longer count as broken when the turn ends.

Cheers,
Jim

John is correct.
On p 65 there is no roll for SL breaks only killed , wounded or routs off table.
He only breaks if he is attached at the time the team breaks.
Even if he is attached unless your opponent ends the turn immediately you have a chance to change the situation.

Yeah, there's an important difference between "break" and "rout" in CoC terminology. You break as soon as your shock reaches double the number of men (so for a 2-man team with an SL that would be 6 shock). You don't "rout" until the turn ends, when all broken teams are removed from the table.

So your SL can break with the team, but then you've got until the turn ends to detach him and send him elsewhere.

Thank you all. The point we missed is as Andy decribes; the difference between break and rout. I had a sense we were playing it incorrectly but of course in the heat of play sometimes things do not get checked.
