Canister - Close Range?

Post by bogrot »

On page 44 Canister range is depended on the type of gun. I.e., 0-18" for light gun. On page 45, the middle table lists three ranges for determining the required to hit roll. Would a gun firing canister roll 4-6 to get a hit? If yes, than a heavy gun would hit on a 4-6 at range 30". :?

That's not how I read it: 0-60" counts as Effective range for all guns, hitting on 5-6. If within the specified range for Canister (eg: 30" for heavy guns) it's still 5-6 to hit, but any Shock inflicted is doubled as per table 10.

So canister is fired as effective range (5-6 to hit), but it's range is determined by the size of the gun. I did forget about the doubling of shock points. Thanks.

Nope, sorry guys, canister fire gets a +1 hit bonus according to table 10, so canister will hit on a 4-6 if within range depending on the size of gun. Also need to remember that artillery normally only gets 3 rounds of canister (see page 49).

Missed the modifier on table 10, haven't used artillery much (yet), thanks John.

Oops... last game we did canister as if close.. so 4+ and with the +1 took it to 3+ .. together with double shock that was deadly.. I like the effective +1 for canister taking it to 4+ ... seems more balanced :)

Remember that whilst ball reduces the targets cover by one level, canister does not

The normal result for firing canister is 4-6, but if it's first fire 3-6 and if "present" it would be 2-6. That is impressive.

Except you could argue that "present" or "aimed fire" doesn't really mean much with canister...
