Crashing Volley question

Post by Cptkremmen3 »

Do you have to be in a formation to carry out a crashing volley? We believe the answer is yes but just checking

I don't see why you need to be in a formation?
It's not mentioned in the rules that I can see.

A group cannot fire controlled volleys.

If they can't fire a volley or a controlled volley, can they fire a crashing volley!

I'd say no. I think the answer is in the name. Individual Groups don't fire volleys.

That's how I've always played it. But it doesn't actually specify in the rules as far as I can see.

Controlled and Uncontrolled apply only to formations, per pp. 13 and 42, 43, 49.

The Thin Red Line text refers to groups or formations firing a volley. That may be a bit thin to hang a hat on, but the Crashing Volley rule on p.13 *specifically* refers to a Unit, which means a group OR formation. So I would take it that a group can fire a crashing volley.

A bit Delphic for me...

Unit: Used when referring to Groups or Formations where no specific Unit size or structure is relevant. So, when we say “any Unit can fire” it is just a simpler way of saying “any Group or Formation can fire”.

If a unit can fire a Crashing Volley, then a Group can fire a Crashing Volley, IMHO.

If the box has no number,no Crashing Volley can ever be fired by this Unit.

Is the only refertence i can find by doing a search on the pdf. It specifically mentions unit here so it does look as though a group can fire a crashing volley.

That is certainly what you can take from the rules as written. As for the rules as intended, I think it might well be wrong.

Yeah I'm with Derek on this. Single groups firing a Crashing Volley just seems wrong.
