Saga Age of Crusades

Post by MLB » Tue Jun 04, 2019 7:43 am

Taking a short break between CoC campaigns and we thought we would try a few different rule sets. First up is Saga which neither of us has played before. Regular opponent Dave has painted up some nice Crusade era figures and so we have tried out the Age of Crusades supplement. I've written a fairly comprehensive AAR which you can read here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com ... t-and.html

Nice! I've been eyeing Saga for a while now but have not yet taken the plunge. But I have a unit of the new Victrix vikings on the way, so it's only a matter of time, heh.

If you haven't had the chance yet, Dux Britanniarum is good fun. The "Fate Card" mechanic is a little more random than the Battle Board, but it can still produce those fun moments where someone springs something on you (because unlike the dice on the Battle Board, you generally have no idea what Fate cards your opponent is holding).

Yes, Dux is very much on the list. The Saga battle board was interesting but it does tend to telegraph a player’s intentions, so less fog of war. Nonetheless a nice, challenging system that plays out in a short(ish) time frame.

I think Saga is a solid game. Haven’t tried the second edition but I don’t mind the boards telegraphing a bit. I’m my opinion, warfare was more intimate and I find that because there is less shooting and less camouflage, I don’t need as much “fog of war”. I generally play it figures 1-1 so my 6pts of Vikings is 31 guys (3x warrior, 3x hearth guard and warlord) from one boat on a raid.
