GPS device

Post by poiter50 » Fri Feb 03, 2017 9:43 am

Guys, very off topic but relevant if I want to get to Pardville. I June we are arriving at Cardiff airport from Barcelona after a cruise. I had a quick look at a Car Rental company online and they want 250 Oz dollars for a GPS device for 2.5 weeks! Does anyone know the outright purchase price of one of these as a new item? Or can you point me at a seller.

I asssume you mean what we call a SatNav system with maps for the UK. They start at £35 on Amazon.co.uk. Brand names Garmin and TomTom are closer to £100.

Their quoted price is a total rip off.

And here's a link to Halfords, a big supplier of such items in the UK and their prices:

I also know some friends have used SatNav apps on their smart phones - this is beyond me, I use my phone for phoning people!! - but that may be another option and would have you set and ready to go when picking the car up.

Hope this helps,

Kind regards,

Yeah, I just use Google maps on my phone and it works OK. However, be aware that (according to UK law) you should not even touch your phone whilst driving.

You're not meant to touch your satnav whilst driving either.

Satnavs are available in airport shops. But you don't always get access to the shops when passing through arrivals. Depends on the airport, your flight and the time of day

You might want to weigh the cost of a good data package for your (smart)phone against the cost of a satnav. Google does a reasonable enough job of getting you around so it might be sufficient.

Buy a second hand Tom Tom from EBay, (make sure it's loaded with UK maps) before you travel, and resell it when you get home again, if you're unlikely to be back for some time.

Try Garmin Nuvi. Directions are always clear.
