Sandpaper and basing.

Post by DougM »

So yesterday, I was prepping some of the Warbases 1p sabot bases I use for Sharp Practice. In this case, this involved applying white glue to the top of the base, and then covering in sand to get a texture. (Later I will add cat-litter rocks etc..)

Having applied sand, I leave them to dry a little, then go back and scrape inside the recesses with a sharp knife to remove the inevitable overspill. It's time consuming and messy.

So as I looked at the finished result after a couple of hours.. it occurred to me I could get virtual identical results if I could buy a 'top' for the base, cut from medium Sandpaper to the same spec as the base, and just stick that on.

So I can't believe no-one has suggested this? If Martin (Warbases) is watching... personally, I think it's genius, and a real timesaver.

This is a great idea and there are punches available to make the proper cutouts. See:

Of course this is in the US but I am sure that similar is available in craft shops around the planet!

I was thinking more along the lines that Warbases or whoever offering the bases could use the identical cutting pattern on a sheet of sandpaper so that it was an exact match, and sell it as an add on to the base..

You could use one of the sabot bases (If they are all identical) to cut out drill out the holes and you would have pattern to cut the circles.

True, but I'm lazy. It would just be easier to have them as a perfect cut add-on product.

I have done this with finer-grit sandpaper for an asphalt texture for sci-fi minis, and it certainly works. Just be aware that cutting sandpaper is really rough on whatever you're using to make the cut (punch, scissors, hobby knife, etc).

Have you tried Supreme Littleness Designs sabots? They come with separate card bases - apply your basing material to the sabot, use a finger or other implement to clean the holes and then glue on the sabot base.

yes I have used the Supreme Littleness sabot bases, but this is a different issue. It's a simple way to texture bases that wouldn't require the messing about with PVA and sand.
