Yeah you have to do thin layers otherwise the lower bit doesn't dry and stays opaque.

That’s actually what I used here in these culverts. It did dry a little opaque but served its purpose. I’ve never used the resin water products, but they look very good and I will venture their one day. For some streams I made recently I used Modge Podge gloss varnish which worked well enough, but not as convincing as resin.
